5 Ways to Make your Community Safer Today
There are simple ways to help prevent crime that we can implement right away to provide increased safety for ourselves and our neighbors.
Interacting with Neighbors
Your neighbors are your best line of safety against community crime. So many people invest in security
systems with expensive technology and yet they ignore the one powerful resource they have living right
next door—their neighbors. Introduce yourself and get to know them. Learn whether they work during
the day, if they have children and what needs they may have (e.g. are they elderly and need to be
checked on once in a while, do they have small children or teenage drivers).
When you build a network with your neighbors you can help one another be aware of who is in your
neighborhood and what behaviors or visitors are suspicious. Create a phone list so you can reach your
neighbors f you see anything that seems off or potentially threatening around their home. You can also
offer to mow their lawn and pick up their mail when they are out of town, and ask they do the same for
you in return. Having a neighbor to call on in a time of distress can be a lifesaver (literally).

Turn up the Lights
The more lighting on your street the safer it is because criminals lurk and hide under the cover of
darkness. Streetlamps are not the only way to do this. Get together with your neighbors and ask each
house to turn on their porch lights in the evenings and install motion‐sensor lights. Using timers on your
lights are an easy way to turn lamps off and on remotely so you don't have to worry about remembering
to do it every night or when you are away.
Hang out Outdoors
Not only is fresh air healthy for us and walking great exercise, but gathering with neighbors socially is
the glue that bonds strong communities together. You can organize a neighborhood cookout, host an
informal get together or just pass by on your daily walk and chat with neighbors as they garden or hang
out in their yards throwing the football with their kids. As a bonus, you will get to know the families of
the kids that your children spend time with, which is crucial to keeping your kids as safe as possible
when they are not at home with you.
Get to Know your Unity One Inc. Team
If you are lucky enough to live in or around a community protected by UNITY ONE Inc. take the time to get to know your Security Officers. Think of your local Unity One Inc. team of security professionals as partners in keeping your streets safe.
Express to them your desire to keep the neighborhood safe, and notify them when issues of concern
pop up or you see something that may be a potential threat. You might even want to seek their advice in
how to start a Neighborhood Watch program, including using their Community Reporting App for
Iphone or Android which turns any smartphone into a community safety resource you can access 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. In our connected, tech‐savvy world, security is literally at your fingertips!
Install a Security System
Installing a security system provides security you can depend on, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Studies show that the higher the number of home security systems in an area, the lower the number of
home break‐ins in that area. Thieves will usually go for the easiest targets which pose the least chances
of getting caught. But remember, a security system is most effective when used regularly and properly.
Community safety is a neighborhood responsibility. Your best defense against crime is the awareness of
what is going on around you and a familiarity with your neighbors and local police department. There is
strength in numbers so use your community members to strengthen your entire neighborhood by
having one another's interests and protection in mind at all times. For more information on how to
